Writing
At Broadbottom CE (VC) Primary School, we aim for all children to communicate with confidence and creativity through the medium of writing. We encourage them to use their ideas, knowledge and emotions across a wide range of genres, understanding and valuing the power of the written word. Writing gives life to children’s imagination and enables them to express their growing understanding of the wider world. From early mark making to crafting articulate pieces across different styles, children make significant progress as writers. They experience a rich diet of language through reading, storytelling and discussion, and from this foundation they develop the skills to become thoughtful, purposeful writers. We blend creativity with secure grammar teaching to plan engaging, inspiring lessons. We believe every child has the potential to flourish as a writer – including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND – developing passion, voice and flair.
Across the curriculum, children write for real purposes, maintaining a high standard of both transcription and composition. They are inspired by carefully chosen texts that reflect their interests, the world around them and our Christian values, as well as by memorable enrichment opportunities that fuel their desire to write. We equip children with the knowledge and confidence to discuss ideas passionately, enabling them to express themselves clearly across a wide range of subjects. Writing provides opportunities for personal growth too: in history, children may grow intellectually as they become experts in a period and share this knowledge through reports; culturally, they may broaden their understanding of community life through reflective writing; and spiritually, they may use writing as a way to explore and express their own beliefs and values.
Children at Broadbottom CE (VC) Primary School are active participants in the writing process and take pride and ownership in their work. We recognise the vital role writing plays in developing self-esteem and providing essential life skills, preparing our children for fulfilling and rewarding futures. By equipping them with both skills and knowledge, we inspire them to dream big – whether as future journalists, teachers, lawyers, authors, or any path where the power of words can make a difference.
